Syracuse student under investigation for sexual assault on campus
Syracuse Police Department reported last Tuesday that a student is under investigation after being accused of sexual assault in Brewster Hall on campus. Sgt. Matthew Malinowski, spokesperson for the SPD, said that the department will not be providing an incident report right now because the investigation is ongoing. For the past week, social media posts made about the sexual assault have been trending.

While the Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act stops universities from putting out educational records of
student accused of crimes, it also allows them to release results of the final
disciplinary if a student commits a violent crime, including sexual assault. Senior
associative vice president for Syracuse University communications, Sarah Scalese, said
that the university does not comment on active investigations. However, Scalese
said, “Where sufficient evidence exists that a student has engaged in sexual
misconduct, our policy is to remove the individual from campus and if the
survivor chooses, the case is referred to local law enforcement for criminal
prosecution.”
Seeing that the case just began
being investigated a week ago, evidence is still being compiled in order to take
fair actions against the suspect if the accusation is true.
