These UNC students aim to create a space for and by Latinx journalists on campus

By: The Daily Tar Heel

In June, two juniors at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill had an idea to try and create a more inclusive space in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Angelica Edwards and Julian Berger asked if their school had a National Association of Hispanic Journalists chapter. When they were told that there was not one, the students got started working to create one.

Within one summer, Edwards and Berger officially established the UNC-Chapel Hill NAHJ. Angelica, who is the president of the chapter, said that "The purpose of creating this chapter is to create a space for Latinx journalism students on campus." The newly appointed president also said that she plans on inviting guest speakers to the chapter as well as eventually host networking events for the students.

Paul Cadros, who is an associate professor in the journalism school as well as a faculty advisor for the university, said that the organization will help Latinx students network and find more opportunities within the journalism and media field. He said, "I think in terms of diversity and inclusion for Hussman, this is a really big step for the school to have this chapter and organization within the school, providing these opportunities for the growing number of Latinx students."

Edwards says that students do not have to Latinx or in the journalism school in order to join, she says that all allies are welcome. Through this chapter, Edwards and Berger want to teach about things that might not be taught in the school's journalism classes. This includes learning how to cover the topic of immigration and tips on reporting in Spanish speaking communities.
