8. PUBLIC RECORDS - LOCAL
Local Public Records Report
I think that the concept of public records can seem a little strange at first, but can actually be quite beneficial to the public. Personally, I think it is extremely interesting that a quick Google search can bring someone to seeing the inmate roster or divorce records of their town or state. Also, being an aspiring journalist, it makes me excited that the journalism field has the opportunity to bring information like this to the public.
As of right now, there are 36
inmates held in custody at the Columbia County Justice and Detention Facility
on Rawhide Road in Magnolia, according to Magnolia Reporter and the Columbia
County Sheriff’s Office. Many of these people are currently placed on bond or
waiting to be sentenced, but all are innocent until proven guilty. One
interesting thing about public records is that the public can see the charges against
a suspect and the sentence or bond they are facing. For example, the most recent
booking of an inmate in the Detention Facility is Robert Earl Daniels who was
booked on September 17.
While reading through the list of inmates
on the Columbia County Sheriff Office’s website, I came across four people
being held that I actually recognized. The four people were Quincy Isaih Lewis,
Odies Wilson, Shaivonn Robinson, and Lekamerin Vaunye Tolbert. In case these
names do not ring a bell, these are the four young men who were charged with
capital murder after the shooting and killing of a Southern Arkansas University
student in August. Being a current SAU student, it was a little unnerving seeing
people that I had gone to school with on the list of inmates in Magnolia. I
think this is one reason public records are so important. In cases like this,
where many students were shaken up over the tragic incident, it is good to be
able to see exactly what is happening to the suspects of the shooting. I think public
records are not only important for law enforcement, but for anyone. I think any
person could benefit from checking up on public records from time to time.
